I grew up in the family business back in Chicago, IL. I spent my time after school hanging out in my father’s
custom cabinet shop and by the time I graduated from high school in 1991, I was playing a major role in the
company. At the age of eighteen, I was designing, building and installing custom furniture. As an added service
the company, Retana Cabinet Works, offered antique furniture restoration. This quickly became my passion, as I
had learned at an early age to appreciate the craftsmanship that went into building these pieces.
Today, I use my experience and craftsmanship, along with great care and professionalism to repair, restore,
and refinish wood and antique furniture. I take great pride and pleasure in being able to take an old piece of
family heirloom furniture and making it so that it can continue to pass on throughout generations.
While I can not say I do not use power tools at all, I can say that I use them as little as possible. A lot of what I do
is done by hand – the stripping, the sanding, the carving, the staining and finishing. This allows me to pay
attention to the details, just as it was when they were being built. Because of my belief in restoration, I make
every attempt to do as little to the piece as is necessary; my focus is on bringing the furniture as close as is
possible to it’s original state. I will never try to sell you on a service you don’t need.
If you have a piece of furniture that holds a monetary value or a sentimental value for you, trust that I will use my
experience and craftsmanship along with great care and professionalism to make it “Good As New”.
